The Special Dedication Song.

One final slow song after your special dances brings everyone you love onto the dance floor together — and quietly sets up one of the most important transitions of the entire evening.

You do not need to choose this song yourself. In fact, most couples leave it up to me.

The idea

It is not really another special dance.

Your first dance and family dances are about particular relationships. The Special Dedication Song is different.

It is dedicated to everyone who has helped make your wedding day special: your families, your wedding party, your closest friends and every guest who has come to celebrate with you.

I invite everyone to join you on the dance floor for one final slow song together.

The result is a warm, inclusive moment that gives the formal dances a natural ending — while also preparing the room for what comes next.

How it works

From special dances to a full dance floor.

There is a little DJ strategy hiding inside what feels like a very simple wedding moment.

01

The special dances finish.

The first dance and any parent, family or other meaningful dances take place while everyone watches from around the room.

Without a transition, those dances can end with the newlyweds standing alone on an otherwise empty dance floor.

02

Everyone is invited in.

Before the final slow song, I dedicate it to everyone who has made the day special and invite all of your guests to join you.

Couples, families, friends and the wedding party all arrive on the dance floor at the same time.

03

The party begins from a full floor.

By the time the Special Dedication Song ends, everyone is already together and comfortable on the dance floor.

Instead of asking an empty room to suddenly begin dancing, I can transition directly into the first song of the party.

The DJ logic behind it

It is much easier to go from 100 to 100 than from 0 to 100.

Why the transition matters

The first song of the party should not have to create the party from nothing.

Opening a dance floor can be one of the most delicate transitions of the night.

Imagine the alternative: the newlyweds finish their first dance, everyone applauds, they walk away from the floor, and then the DJ suddenly plays an upbeat song and hopes people come back.

That asks the first dancers to make a very public decision to leave their seats and step onto an empty floor.

The Special Dedication Song removes that awkward moment entirely. Nobody needs to be the first person to start the party because everyone is already there.

What your guests hear

A simple invitation.

I do not explain the strategy to your guests. For them, this should simply feel like a lovely moment shared with the people who matter most.

The wording changes naturally from wedding to wedding, but the invitation is usually something like this:

“This next song is a special dedication to everyone who has helped make today so special — and that means every single one of you here tonight.”

Everyone is then invited to join the newlyweds on the dance floor.

Choosing the song

You probably do not need to choose one.

This is one of the questions couples most often leave blank on my wedding questionnaire — and that is completely fine.

01

My usual choice

My longtime go-to is “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong.

It is warm, familiar and multigenerational, and the sentiment works just as beautifully for family and friendship as it does for couples.

02

Your choice

If there is a song that feels especially meaningful to you, your families or your group of friends, absolutely choose it.

The best Special Dedication Songs tend to feel inclusive rather than being solely about romantic love.

03

The moment can decide

Sometimes another song simply feels more appropriate once I understand the couple, their guests and the atmosphere in the room.

If you leave the selection to me, I am happy to choose something that fits naturally.

Special Dedication Song ideas

Need some inspiration?

Here are a few songs that can work well for this moment. The right choice does not need to be overly sentimental — it simply needs to feel warm, inclusive and right for the people in the room.

“We aren’t sure what to select for this!”

No worries at all. Most couples leave the Special Dedication Song up to me. Unless you already have something meaningful in mind, there is no need to spend time trying to find the perfect song for this moment.

The bigger idea

Good wedding DJing is often about the space between the songs.

The Special Dedication Song is a good example of something that may look very small on a wedding timeline but has an outsized effect on how the evening feels.

It acknowledges the people in the room, avoids an awkward reset after the formal dances and gives open dancing a natural beginning.

The song itself matters, but so does understanding why it is being played, what the room is doing while it plays and where the night needs to go next.

That is the difference between simply playing wedding songs and shaping the flow of the celebration.

Planning your wedding music

The Special Dedication Song is only one transition.

Ceremony music, introductions, dinner, speeches, special dances and open dancing all work together to create the rhythm of the day.
